Collective Spirit!
This is a longer report than
usual, so I ask you to take an extra
minute or two and read it through to
the end! A great deal has
been happening in Emsworth and
indeed within the EBA during the
past month or so.
Please read on below.
EBA, please forward this newsletter and
spread the word!
Our chairman Carol Haskett and our treasurer Amanda Thomas are both standing down after many years of brilliant service. They will be missed, but I am sure both these hard working women will stay involved with the EBA and projects close to their hearts. Brian Goff has kindly agreed to take responsibility for the day to day management of our finances and I have agreed to act as interim chairman. [Both appointments subject to the wishes of the AGM] The AGM will be held on Monday 11th June [6p.m.] in The Brookfield Hotel. Please do your best to attend, the short meeting will be followed by wine and nibbles. St. Georges Week was bigger and more adventurous this year, The Emsworth proms returned, an afternoon recalling the life and times of Edward Elgar, a big curry night and of course sea shanties and a quiz organised by Springfield Care Homes in The Brookfield Hotel. The military parade on St Georges Day itself took place in atrocious and [almost] sub zero temperatures, but this did not detract from the pride and enjoyment shown by all attending. More than 100 soldiers, 50 veterans and 40 school children from Thorney Island Primary marched, not to the sound of a military band, but the wonderful jazz of George Regis and his jazzmen. All veterans received the customary Emsworth Rose. For the first time the owners of The Deck Cafe in Emsworth Yacht Harbour joined the celebrations by putting on an evening of superb food and a visit from Brian of the Archers, what could be more English than that? Here is a breakdown of monies collected for the Royal Artillery Charitable Fund during the week: ££££ Donations/flags £ Raffles 47 Regiment Reception. 501.02 [Brookfield Hotel] Street Collection [St Georges Day] 399.98 61.35 “Big Curry evening [Spice Village Restaurant & Emsworth Community Singers] 1000.00 33.98 The Shanty Men [Emsworth Sailing 480.00 193.47 Club] “Brian of the Archers” [The Deck Café] 95.00 124.00 Emsworth Proms Concert. [Brookfield Hotel] 54.00 Quiz Night [Springfield Care Homes] 455.00 29.55 215.00 Jazz evening 240.00 [ECA] Town shop window Competition. 105.00 Dryden Management Consultancy 164.54 ££ sub totals 3929.54 715.46 455.00 TOTAL: £5100.00 Thanks to Mary Colburn and Caroline Flint, for organising the shop window and children’s painting competitions, and congratulations to all the winners. Our charity this year is the Royal Artillery Charitable Fund and whilst the final amounts collected are not yet known, it is anticipated to be around the £4000.00 mark. Again because of the awful weather the Dragon Boat Race had to be cancelled and it’s been provisionally rescheduled to Sunday 12th August 2012. The EBA have also worked closely with Emsworth artists to bring their unique art right into the centre of town. Many shops and businesses are displaying prints and pictures and we hope to develop the Art Trail further in the year’s ahead. We have also collaborated with HBC in getting Collective Spirit the Olympic cultural boat [created and built at Thornham Marina] to make an unscheduled stopover at the quay in South Street a couple days after its official launch. Again in spite of pretty awful weather many residents and visitors came to view this unique and beautiful boat. This brings me to the whole point of the EBA, it’s our job is to promote and encourage residents and visitors to use the full range of facilities available here. St Georges Week for example brings in many visitors pubs, cafes and restaurants would benefit more, if for example they offered English themed meals and music during the week. So many businesses do enter the spirit of things, but we need many more to do so. Next Year [2013] The Olympic Games and HM The Queens Jubilee will be distant memories and we hope by then the [local and national] economies will be well on the way to recovery. We need to maintain the high profile that Emsworth enjoys and we are actively considering the following projects for 2013. 1. Inviting Hampshire Farmers Markets to hold monthly markets in the town. 2. A small committee is considering ways in which a reformed food festival might return to Emsworth. [This committee under the leadership of Mary Colburn is distinct and separate from the EBA, but we have helped fund this exploratory work. 3. Improving links between the town and PG Wodehouse and considering the possibility of commissioning a statue that will bring more people interested in this great English writer to the town. Emsworth Museum has developed a Wodehouse Trail and a statue would become the centrepiece of this. 4. To renew and improve the Christmas lights around the square. [Carol Haskett will report to the AGM the final results of the Coop community fund which will help finance this initiative] 5. Encourage Chichester Harbour Conservancy to have a presence in the town during the summer months. The harbour is a wonderful natural asset and we are the only town on it. This will help improve our profile with harbour visitors. More on this and other matters you may wish to raise at your AGM, Monday 11th June 2012 [6p.m.] in the Brookfield Hotel. The meeting will be followed by wine and nibbles.
Please do your best to attend. Thank
you.
Brendan Gibb-Gray.

OlivesFrom our first arrival in November 1999 we immediately found Emsworth to be a most welcoming and friendly place. We opened Fat Olives on Saturday 9th January 2000 with a full house of local and supporting people. Both our careers since the age of fifteen have been working within luxury hotels, Julia in Front of House, Finance and Sales with Lawrence in Food & Beverage. Running our own Restaurant was always our dream. At Fat Olives we strive to ensure our customers are able to enjoy a relaxed and informal atmosphere with friendly attentive service. All our dishes are freshly prepared on the premises using as many local suppliers within the surrounding areas as well as serving fish and seafood from sustainable sources. We are very proud to be part of Emsworth's community and lots of our customers and suppliers have now become friends. It is this local following that has supported us to gain recognition over the years with the Portsmouth News for ‘The Restaurant of the Year Awards” and “Charity Best Business Awards”. As well as listed in the top Five Food guides each year since our first year of opening. Over the years we have also had the great opportunity of working closely with local schools and local charities on many events from “The Battle of Trafalgar” week to cookery workshops and involvement with the Emsworth Food Festival. We have several events organised for the next few months, so please view them in the offers and events below. Lawrence and Julia would welcome the opportunity to see you at any of our up and coming events listed below or you can call us to make your reservation on 01243 377914 or visit our website www.fatolives.co.uk.

2011 was a once again a successful
and busy year for the EBA. With
trading conditions still slow it is
likely that 2012 will be difficult
economically for some businesses,
therefore it is particularly
important that the Association
continues to work for the benefit of
all its members and the wider
community.
Membership remains at £45 for the next year and we welcome a range of Emsworth based businesses to join the association. If you would like to renew or join the association, please contact Carol Common on 01243 379448 or visit the website to download the membership form. Please spread the word about the work of the EBA to any local businesses who you feel would benefit from joining. There have been some notable achievements by the EBA to continue to keep Emsworth on the map and an attractive place to live and work.
Aims and objectives
•
To promote Emsworth as an
attractive, first class business
location.
•
Work with the local
authority on matters that impact
businesses. This allows us to
speak with one voice which has
more impact on decisions made by
the council, eg. litter removal,
street cleaning, planning and
development and car parking
charges. We were instrumental
in persuading HBC not to charge
for street parking and raising
the time from 20minutes to 45
minutes in the town.
•
Work closely with the
police on matters of joint
concern and interest.
•
Identify vacant
businesses and network amongst
interested members.
•
The EBA committee meet
once a month on the first
Tuesday of each month where all
members are invited to attend.
This is not compulsory and
usually the majority of members
only attend when they want
advice or wish to comment on
certain issues.
•
Offer free website
facilities and advertising for
members tailored to the their
individual needs
Activities and ongoing
projects
•
As Emsworth is their
‘home town’, we have forged
links with the armed forces on
Thorney Island and have a St
George’s day music week and
parade through the town.
•
Responsible for the
flowering boats on the A259
eastern and western approaches
to Emsworth.
•
Permanent planting on the
Emsworth roundabout and all the
summer flowering tubs and
baskets.
•
Christmas lights
festivities in Emsworth.
•
Refurbishment of war
memorial / bus shelter in The
Square
•
Installation of flag pole
in The Square.
•
Charity social events for
members during the year.
•
Networking meetings.
•
Regular newsletters to
keep you up-to-date with events.
